Wellbeing Source Map — for a Carer Under Load

Young: sole carer of two teens, up 6am, bed ~11pm, running SolOS, managing work politics. Diet flags: coffee w/ sugar+milk+turmeric+cinnamon on empty stomach, skips lunch, weekend beers. Under-eye puffiness (kidney/dampness reading).

This note is educational and structural — not medical advice, not diagnosis, not a protocol to execute. Framework visibility, not prescription.

The structural read

His load has a specific shape: chronic, low-grade, non-negotiable, with no recovery window. The stress is not episodic (a deadline) — it is a baseline that never returns to zero. That distinction matters, because the research below is specifically about chronic stress, not acute.

Three concurrent stressors:

  1. Caregiving — 2 teens (one ASD), sole carer. No relief, no backup.
  2. Work — multi-agent build + politics with a new manager. "Liver stagnation" reading maps onto this.
  3. Self-neglect accumulating — skipped meals, screen-heavy evenings.

The literature is unambiguous that the interaction matters more than any single load. The corpus repeatedly frames this as "the invisible second patient."

  • The Happiness Lab (Laurie Santos) — academic counterweight, actual experiments. How to Tame Stress (17 Jun 2024) is built around an American caregiver community. Less pep, more rigour.
  • Life Kit: Health (NPR) — journalism-graded, editorially reviewed. Dr Saundra Dalton-Smith on seven kinds of rest (2 Feb 2026).

The overlap worth holding

Kushi's liver-stagnation / dampness cluster and the modern cortisol→visceral-fat cluster are the same loop in two vocabularies.

  • Kushi: liver qi constraint, dampness, under-eye signs, from overwork + poor diet.
  • Modern: chronic cortisol elevation → visceral fat deposition; perimenopause progesterone decline → cortisol rise → sleep worsening.

Where the two frames converge is where the observation is most robust. Where they diverge, they are describing different layers — Kushi at the constitutional and experiential layer, modern evidence at the physiological mechanism layer.

Caregiver-specific evidence

  • Loneliness/social isolation → mortality — Holt-Lunstad 2015, 70 studies. Sharpest actionable edge for a sole carer: social connection is not a nicety, it is a variable with mortality weight.
  • Chronic stress ages immune system by up to 10 years — Epel/Dhabhar, NIA 2022.
  • TAME trial — MBSR ≈ escitalopram for anxiety, non-inferiority in one trial. Real, and must be stated precisely.
  • Alcohol — WHO Jan 2023: no safe amount; IARC Group 1. He has explicitly agreed 1-2 weekend beers as wind-down is fine. This note does not relitigate that. Agreement stands.

Structural (non-prescriptive) observations

  • His caffeine pattern (sugared coffee on an empty stomach, work black coffee) sits against the corpus's own finding that morning light (30 mentions) is the most under-discussed high-value intervention.
  • Skipped lunch is the most-cited load-bearing gap in the caregiver literature — cortisol + low blood sugar + no recovery window.
  • Rest ≠ sleep. For a carer, sensory/perceptual rest may be the scarce input, not sleep hours. Dalton-Smith's seven kinds of rest is the direct address.
  • Already agreed with Young previously (do not re-litigate): warm congee breakfast, never skip lunch (onigiri), screen-off runway ~10:15pm.

Framing

Never prescribe. Present structure, mark evidence strength honestly, let him locate himself in it. This is a mirror, not a clinician. A podcast should not become a fourth obligation in a life already carrying three.
