Swing & Trend Trading — Indicator Study (Eva's Desk Reference)
Swing & Trend Trading — Indicator Study (Eva's Desk Reference)
Source: Young's study pack (Oct 2026). Modified by Eva for the desk: ASX + MINI lane, 2h/daily multi-timeframe, Moomoo/CommSec execution, $1k min order.
The 5 Indicators — Role in Our Strategy
1. Double MA (20 & 50 EMA)
- Trend: Golden Cross (20 above 50) = macro uptrend → MINI longs allowed
- Swing: Price pulling back to the 50 EMA = dynamic support → entry zone
- Desk use: Already core — mini_book trend-fit score uses MA50 position (40 pts)
2. Bollinger Bands (20, 2)
- Trend: Squeeze → aggressive break out of top band = new trend start
- Swing: Sideways market → sell upper band, buy lower band
- Desk use: Volatility state check before grid bot entries; squeeze = skip grid, expect breakout
3. Volume + MA (20-period)
- Trend: Rising volume on up-days = big money participating (validation)
- Swing: Resistance hit on LOW volume = likely reversal. Breakout needs volume spike.
- Desk use: Already in scans (vol vs 20d avg). Breakout entries need ≥1.5x vol avg.
4. MACD (12, 26, 9)
- Trend: Histogram shifts = trend accelerating/fading
- Swing: Bullish cross below zero line = short-term swing entry
- Desk use: Add to ASX200 scan as momentum confirmation for MINI entries
5. Heikin-Ashi (Daily)
- Trend: Strings of green/red candles = hold through noise, don't panic-sell
- Swing: Small-bodied candle with long upper wick after red string = swing bottom forming
- Desk use: S32 chart already uses HA daily. Use for MINI exit timing (first red candle = exit signal)
Strategic Combinations (don't stack all 5 — clutter)
| Style | Stack | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Trend Follower | Heikin-Ashi + Double MA + Volume | Direction + strength validation + hold through noise |
| Swing Pullback | Candles + Bollinger Bands + MACD | Overextension check + momentum shift trigger |
Strategy 1: Trend-Following Pullback (PRIMARY for MINI lane)
Timeframe: Daily (Heikin-Ashi filter) → 2-hour (entry execution)
Entry (Long):
- Daily HA: clear string of green candles, no lower wicks
- 2H chart: price pulls back INTO the 20–50 EMA zone
- Bullish reversal candle (hammer/engulfing) in that zone on ABOVE-average volume
- Enter at close of that high-volume 2H bullish candle
Exit:
- SL: below 2H swing low or below 50 EMA
- TP: 1:2 risk-reward, OR exit on first Daily HA red reversal candle
- Once at 1:1 → move SL to breakeven
MINI application: This is the BOEKOB/DYLKOD playbook. Daily HA green = keep MINI long. First red HA candle = close MINI.
Strategy 2: Volatility Breakout (SECONDARY — catch runners)
Timeframe: Daily (standard candles, 50/200 EMA filter) → 2-hour (BB squeeze + MACD)
Entry (Long):
- Daily: price safely ABOVE both 50 EMA and 200 EMA
- 2H: Bollinger Bands contract tightly (squeeze)
- MACD histogram crosses above zero (or bullish line cross)
- Enter the moment a 2H candle closes completely OUTSIDE the upper BB during squeeze
Exit:
- SL: middle BB (20 MA) on 2H — break back inside = breakout failed
- TP: no fixed target — ride the upper band. Exit when 2H candle closes below upper BB, or MACD crosses bearish
MINI application: Watch for BB squeeze on uranium names (BOE/DYL/PDN) — squeeze + MACD cross = MINI entry signal. High gear, tight stop at middle band.
Risk Management — 1% Rule (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
Never risk more than 1% of account on one trade.
Position Size = (Account × 1%) ÷ (Entry − Stop Loss)
Examples for Young's accounts:
| Account | 1% Risk | Stock @ $10, SL $9.60 ($0.40 risk) | Position size |
|---|---|---|---|
| CommSec $94k | $940 | $0.40 risk/unit | 2,350 shares (~$23.5k) |
| Moomoo $18k | $180 | $0.40 risk/unit | 450 shares (~$4.5k) |
Moomoo $1k minimum: at $0.40 unit risk, 250 shares = $2,500 min → clears the 1k rule easily.
Outcome Matrix:
- SL hit → lose exactly 1% of account
- TP hit (1:2) → gain 2% of account
- Move SL to breakeven at 1:1 → subsequent risk-free trade
Execution Checklist (before every entry)
- ☐ Daily chart confirms macro direction (HA green for longs)
- ☐ Exact 2H entry trigger identified (pullback to EMA zone OR BB squeeze breakout)
- ☐ Position size calculated from Entry − SL distance (1% rule)
- ☐ MINI available for this ticker? (check CitiFirst PDF)
- ☐ Volume confirms (≥20d avg for swing, ≥1.5x for breakout)
Key Rules
- Never trade against the Daily — higher timeframe always wins
- Execution on 2H closes only — no intraday entries
- Daily bias checked once a day — then 2H triggers carry the trade
- 1% risk per trade, no exceptions — desk rule
