Fundamental read

ZIP — record results, but the stock is falling:

  • FY26 (20 Aug): cash EBTDA $268.9m +57.9%, NPAT $116.4m +45.7%, TTV $16.7bn +27.2%, US now 76% of volume (TTV +42.5% in USD), operating margin 20.0% (+420bps)
  • Clean sweep of all five FY26 targets; FY27 guidance $340m cash EBTDA (+26%) — 10% ABOVE UBS, 6% above consensus
  • $150m buybacks done, new $50m buyback, liquidity $246.5m
  • Yet the stock fell from $4.81 → $2.31 since that result. Short interest still 8.26% (Apr peak 12.7%). Momentum owns this tape; the fundamentals story is not being paid for. CU6-style growth-trade risk.

EML — value trap with a real overhang:

  • Guidance cut FY26 (EBITDA $50m from $60m) on program timing deferrals — stock −34% on that print, 12-year lows
  • APRA/RBA ADI-guarantee structure for stored-value liabilities = regulatory overhang partially extended (implementation date extended, "satisfactory progress" required)
  • New CEO Adam Olding (from 30 Mar) running EML2.0 transformation; consensus FV ~$0.66 vs price $0.235 = market pricing real execution risk
  • 14% short interest (week 37 top-3 most shorted); micro-cap $92M − liquidity caution
  • At 6.2 normalized PE and RBA-rate-sensitive margins, the sum looks cheap, but cheap has kept getting cheaper — falling knife

🎯 Eva's Read

Both are "falling knife" setups — no entry yet on the desk. ZIP has the fundamentals (guide beat, 26% growth, buybacks) but momentum + short interest keep pressing; EML has an unresolved regulatory overhang + guidance risk with 14% shorts. The signal I'd trade: ZIP reclaiming MA20 ($2.58) = first momentum repair; EML needs an APRA resolution or FY26 result confirm before touching. The sector tell: TYR (clean balance sheet) also −40% YTD — this is a rates/sector-wide derating, not company-specific only. Watch US rate-cut path: BNPL funding costs are the sector's lever; cuts = margin relief = the re-rate trigger UBS flagged.

Watch levels: ZIP $1.445 (52w low) / MA20 $2.583; EML $0.225 (52w low). No desk action paper or otherwise — thesis needs confirmation first.

UPDATE — 08 Sep (evening): the structural answer

The index finding (smoking gun)

Official S&P DJI Sept-2026 rebalance doc (announced Fri 4 Sep, effective before open Mon 21 Sep):

  • EML Payments: REMOVED from the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries (line 137 of the PDF)
  • EML joins a large All-Ords cull — with CTT, GRR, NVX, PWR, LKE, IMM and 20+ others; EML is the only payments name removed
  • Not removed from ASX 300 this round (it was already dropped from ASX 200 back in Sep 2022)
  • Context: 2022 mirrored this exactly — ZIP and EML were both ASX-200 removals, with 'index huggers flogging' them into the reset. Fund managers tracking the All-Ords (E.REIT-style passive / mandate-bound) get two weeks of forced selling into 21 Sep.

This reframes the whole move: EML's collapse is heavily flow-driven, not just fundamentals. The index-unwind window is 4 → 21 Sep. Post-21 the forced seller disappears — a classic de capitulation-and-base setup, but only after 21 Sep.

Institutional flow (has been one-way)

  • Viburnum Funds: 7.85% → 5.23% (sold 3.47m shares through 11-31 Aug, filed 2 Sep)
  • Regal Partners: ceased substantial holder (~3.84m shares sold 21 Aug - 2 Sep, filed 4 Sep)
  • Two local funds exiting simultaneously while the index removal looms = distribution phase. When the last forced + discretionary seller is through, the float resets lighter.

EML FY26 results (18 Aug) — the fundamental check

  • Underlying revenue $206.8m (−6%), underlying EBITDA $48.3m (−18%) — within the revised guide
  • Statutory net loss narrowed to $19.7m (from $53.0m)
  • Cash $37.8m (−36%) after class-action settlement + Project Arlo + restructuring outflows ($74.3m of one-offs) → net operating cash OUTFLOW $26.5m
  • $13.6m provision booked for stored-value account shortfall ($9.6m shortfall + $2.2m receivable impairment) — this is the ADI-guarantee tail risk appearing on the balance sheet
  • FY27 EBITDA guide $50-54m (recovery); FY28 pro-forma FCF $30-35m; pipeline $109m (~$50m in tender)
  • New CEO Adam Olding (ex-ZeeFi/Optal, in seat since 30 Mar); Executive Chairman Anthony Hynes (founder of the old EML economics) returned

TYR — the clean operator, getting cleaner

FY26 (25 Aug): gross profit $231.8m (+5.3%), EBITDA $66.9m (+8.6%), nPBT +40% to $24.7m, FCF +49.5% to $29.4m (44% conversion — best as a listed co).

  • Health engine intact: health TTV $7.9bn (+6.4%), allied health +26%, dental +19% — but H2 moderated after GP bulk-billing funding changes (laps by mid-FY27)
  • Banking flywheel: accounts +35% (14.5k), deposits +27%, loans +19%; Thriday acquisition = multi-product stickiness
  • FY27 guide: $240-255m gross profit, 28.5-30.5% EBITDA margin — modest raise
  • Balance sheet: debt/eq 10%, current ratio 1.41 — the anti-EML
  • The stock: $0.74, −17.8% off 3m high $0.90 — sold off with result (gross profit 3% miss vs some ests) + sector derating, NOT company damage. 13.7 norm PE vs CBA 23.4, Block/XYZ
  • Morningstar bear case is fair: offerings replicable by banks; pricing pressure long-run. But near-term: operating leverage is compounding (opex/GP 71.2% → 69.3%)

Updated 🎯 Eva's Read

The trades shift from 'avoid' to 'timed entries':

  1. EML — wait for 21 Sep. The All-Ords removal (effective 21) is the last forced-seller event. Post-removal, with $48m EBITDA vs $92m mkt cap (sub-2x EV/EBITDA for a payments infra co), any ADI-licence grant or FY27 pipeline conversion turns this into a recovery book. Entry trigger: re-listing-stabilised price action in the last week of Sep. Auction risk before 21 Sep is real.
  2. TYR — the quality long on a technical timing basis. No structural problem: profitable, FCF +50%, health engine +26% allied health. The −17.8% from highs is sentiment + the H2 bulk-billing lap. At 13.7 PE with EBITDA margin expanding, a reclaim of the MA20/$0.80 zone is the swing signal. The BNPL sector derating drags it down unfairly — it carries no credit book.
  3. ZIP — unchanged from 08 Sep read: fundamentals aren't the problem, flows are. FY27 $340m EBITDA guide stands; wait for MA20 reclaim.

Rate-sensitivity ladder (highest→lowest): ZIP (credit book) > EML (interest income on stored value + funding costs) > TYR (fee-based, no credit) — which is why TYR breaks least when the sector derates and recovers first.
