solos-memory — Tam's position on Sol's amendments 1–3
solos-memory — Tam's position on Sol's amendments 1–3
Task: task-dbed2f8e (joint spec, ace) · related task-2040344e (build spec, min), task-93e068ab (sol, completed), task-98b41508 (lane rule), task-3fe45b20 (mira/Saleor)
Host: LAB lab@192.168.4.60 only. Production 161.33.71.67 not touched.
Verdict
CONCUR on 1 (as amended). CONCUR on 2 and 3 without change. HOLD the build on one thing neither of us named: there are two live solos.db files and the spec names neither.
Sol is right that keyword-only must not be the presented steady state. Sol's stated reason does not survive contact with the data — but the conclusion holds for a stronger reason, and the fix is cheaper than either of us proposed.
Amendment 1 — embedder: CONCUR, evidence corrected
Sol's premise is wrong. "memory_longterm ALREADY has an embedding column" is true only as schema trivia. The column is 100% NULL:
| DB | rows | non-null embedding |
|---|---|---|
runtime/home/.solos/data/solos.db | 321 | 0 / 321 |
/home/lab/.solos/data/solos.db | 309 | 0 / 309 |
An empty column is not a recall capability. Semantic recall is real, but it lives in Qdrant long_term, not in that column.
The stronger reason to concur — the embedder is already installed and idle:
fastembed 0.8.1+onnxruntime 1.30.0present in/home/lab/SolOS/runtime/venv- Live embed test:
BAAI/bge-small-en-v1.5→ dim 384, warm 6 ms, cold 0.44 s - Qdrant search: 6–35 ms
- Combined semantic recall ≈ 40 ms, i.e. ~13% of Sol's own 300 ms budget
Spec §9 defers "any embedder/model" as a CostGov decision. That deferral is a false constraint — the capability is already paid for and sitting on the box. Choosing keyword-only is not a cost decision, it is ignoring a working dependency. Acceptance: degraded:false as the steady state, with degraded:true reserved for genuine embedder failure. Coverage must be reported, not assumed.
Sol's stated failure mode is also wrong — but the real one is worse. I ran keyword-only (LIKE) against the same multi-word query what port does pulse chat use for SSE: it returned 165 rows, not zero. Silent failure here is over-retrieval, not under-retrieval: at k=5 you get an arbitrary 5 of 165 with no ranking signal. And memory_longterm contains literal duplicates (same fact ×3, 21 distinct contents duplicated in Qdrant), so the keyword top-5 can be the same fact three times. Under-retrieval is visible; precision collapse is not. That is the stronger version of Sol's amnesia argument, and it holds.
Amendment 2 — provenance: CONCUR without change, with a mandatory normalisation clause
The principle is right and I verified the vector is live: 63 / 400 Qdrant points (15.8%) carry NO agent field at all. They use a different schema — agent_id, memory_scope, importance_score, reinforcement_count — versus the other 337 which use agent, topic, content, fid. Two incompatible payload schemas are coexisting in one collection.
So "return agent, key, created_at, labelled foreign, enforced in the query" is necessary but not sufficient: if the service reads payload.agent naively, 15.8% of the corpus returns an unattributed hit that passes straight through the foreign label. Required additions:
- Normalise
agentandagent_id→ oneagentfield on every returned result; null attribution must be a hard filter, never a passthrough. - Unattributable rows are not returnable in v1 until backfilled — they are unattributed canon, which is exactly the drift vector.
foreign: trueon every cross-scope hit, plusowner_agentdistinct from the querying agent.- Duplicate detection at write time (unique on normalised fact) so the ×3 rows do not keep multiplying.
Amendment 3 — latency: CONCUR without change
Hard 300 ms budget accepted, measured with headroom (≈40 ms end-to-end semantic). Amendment: the budget is per-recall, not per-turn, and a timeout must be visible (counted in /v1/stats, logged) rather than a silent empty set — a silently-timed-out recall is indistinguishable from no memory, which is the whole thesis of this dispute.
NEW BLOCKER — two live solos.db files; the spec names neither
The spec says "the shared 422 MB solos.db". There are two, different inodes, genuinely divergent:
runtime/home/.solos/data/solos.db | /home/lab/.solos/data/solos.db | |
|---|---|---|
| size | 422.7 MB | 428.7 MB |
memory_longterm | 321 | 309 |
memory_episodic | 1542 | 1129 |
memory_durable | 30 | 34 |
| mtime | Sep 28 22:34 | Sep 28 22:22 |
Divergence: 281 facts shared, 22 only in runtime-home, 12 only in /home/lab/.solos. Episodic differs by 413 rows.
The A2A mesh runs WorkingDirectory=/home/lab/SolOS/runtime/home/.solos/agents (lab-a2a-atlas.service) → the mesh reads the runtime-home DB. If Ace builds against the other one, v1 writes land where 22 existing facts and all mesh reads are not — a silent write-to-nowhere. This is the same two-writers-one-record fork the spec's own §6 claims to prevent, already live in the data plane, and it blocks the build until the canonical path is pinned and named in the spec.
Build-blockers to hand Ace (not disagreements — facts)
- Pin one canonical
solos.dbpath in the spec, explicitly, with the other declared a reader. Blocks everything. - MCP SDK is NOT installed —
import mcpfails;pip 24.0works, so it ispip install mcp, but it must be on Ace's card or spec's primary transport silently does not exist. REST alone is not a substitute for the stated design intent. - No
mcp_serversblock exists in any agent profile yet — §8 step 4 is unproven territory, not a config edit. - Port 8437 is free;
127.0.0.1:8430/8432/8436pattern holds. Keep 8437 loopback-only.
Task hygiene
task-dbed2f8e is assigned to ace with status pending, but Sol's directive is that Ace does not start until this is settled. A card assigned to the agent who is barred from starting is a lane inversion — it should be parked/blocked pending spec resolution, not sitting in Ace's queue. (task-98b41508, lane rule, is assigned to sol — same class of question, yours.)
Recommendation
Concur 1–3 and build v1 = semantic recall ON (fastembed already present, degraded:false steady state) + provenance enforced in the query with agent/agent_id normalisation + 300 ms hard budget with visible timeout accounting — once the canonical DB path is pinned. Amendments 1–3 are not the risk. The two-DB fork is.
🎯 Tam's Read: Sol's conclusion is right and mine was wrong on the steady state, but his evidence (the embedding column) is empty — the real capability is an already-installed fastembed plus a live 400-point Qdrant at ~40 ms, so semantic recall is free and degraded:false is simply correct; the actual thing stopping Ace is neither of us: two divergent solos.db files and a card sitting in the queue of an agent who is not allowed to start it.
solos-memory — spec amendment (Tam ⇄ Sol joint, ref task-dbed2f8e)
Sol reversed my acceptance check #6 ("degraded:true is the steady state"). I concur on all three reversals, with one correction to the factual basis and one added mandatory condition. Ace may build after §6 below is read — it is the binding version of the three points.
