EML / Sept-2026 index removal — forced-flow anatomy

EML / Sept-2026 index removal — forced-flow anatomy

Summary (3 bullets)

  • ✅ Smoking gun confirmed at primary source. S&P DJI Sept-2026 quarterly rebalance (announced Sydney, 4 Sep 2026) removes EML Payments from the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries, effective prior to open Mon 21 Sep 2026. PDF pulled and text-extracted from both the official Market Index file and the ASX announcement feed.
  • ⚠️ Refinement to the "forced flow" thesis: the mechanical index-product selling already happened in Sep 2022 (ASX 200 exit) and Mar 2023 (ASX 300 / Small Ordinaries exit). What the 21 Sep 2026 event forces is mandate-constrained active money (Viburnum, Regal — both verified) plus permanent loss of benchmark-investable status (screens, model portfolios, super mandates that can only hold All Ords constituents).
  • ✅ Sep-2022 precedent verified: ZIP + EML were both removed from the S&P/ASX 200 effective 19 Sep 2022 (announced Fri 2 Sep 2022); contemporaneous press explicitly flagged index-hugging managers forced to offload in the 2-week window. Same announcement→implementation cadence applies now (4 Sep → 21 Sep).

Key findings

1. The index event (verified, primary source)

  • Announcement: "S&P Dow Jones Indices Announces September 2026 Quarterly Rebalance", SYDNEY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2026; changes effective prior to open Monday, September 21, 2026.
  • September 2026 is a semi-annual review for the S&P/ASX 300 and All Ordinaries (quarterly for 20/50/100/200).
  • All Ordinaries removal list includes: EML EML Payments Limited (line 237 of pdftotext extraction; removals also include AD8, CXL, CTT, NVX, SLD, WJL and ~23 others).
  • EML is NOT in the Sept-2026 ASX 200 or ASX 300 removal lists — it left the 200 on 19 Sep 2022 and the 300/Small Ordinaries in Mar 2023. This is the final S&P index tie being cut.

2. Institutional exits (verified, Form 604 primary)

  • Viburnum Funds Pty Ltd (Form 604, change date 31/08/2026, lodged 02/09/2026): FPO holding 29,453,795 (7.85%) → 20,385,106 (5.23%). Breakdown: on-market sales 11/08–31/08/2026 (e.g. 3,465,969 FPO for ~A$814,927) plus one 3,387,794-FPO "ceasing to have power to exercise/control votes" leg on 31/08. Net removal ≈ 9.07M shares ≈ 2.62pp in ~3 weeks.
    • Scale: EML avg volume ≈ 1.78M shares/day → Viburnum's exit ≈ ~5 days of ADV. At ~A$0.35 that is ~A$3.2M notional — big vs a A$135M market cap.
  • Regal Partners + associates ceased to be substantial holders after disposals between 21 Aug – 2 Sep 2026 (was 26.3M / 6.77% per last notice 17/06/2026). Eva's "+3.84m shares" figure consistent with a 1%-change notice en route to sub-5%; I verified the exit itself, not the exact share delta.
  • Both disclosure chains (Viburnum 31/08, Regal by 02/09) precede the 04/09 rebalance announcement — these funds saw the semi-annual review math coming (3-month avg FMC cut-off was already set). Smart money front-ran the index; public flow now follows.

3. The 2022 precedent — what actually happened then

  • Sep 2022: S&P removed ZIP and EML from S&P/ASX 200 (announced Fri 2 Sep, effective Mon 19 Sep 2022), alongside 360, AVZ, CCX, CUV, JHG, PBH. ZIP market cap had fallen to <A$600M at ~A$0.87.
  • Contemporary reporting (Banking Day 6 Sep 2022): "Index-hugging fund managers are expected to offload their remaining interests… ahead of the quarterly compositional reset." Motley Fool: forced selling "between now and the rebalance," extra pressure on a "very weak" buy side.
  • Note the tier difference: 2022 hit big ASX-200-tracking ETF/super passive money (multibillion AUM); 2026's All Ords removal is a smaller, more symbolic/structural cut — see implications.

4. Index mechanics that decide how much flow is actually forced

  • All Ordinaries rebalances semi-annually (Mar/Sep); eligibility is 3-month average (float-adjusted) market cap + relative-liquidity tests benchmarked against the All Ords itself (ASX "S&P/ASX indices 101").
  • Direct XAO-linked products are few (S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries ETFs — iShares ISO A$125.7M net assets, SPDR SSO — track ASX-300-minus-ASX-100, so EML left those in Mar 2023). The 21 Sep flow is therefore mostly: (a) active managers/super with All Ords-benchmarked mandates trimming to zero overweight, (b) systematic screens that cannot add a non-constituent, (c) short-vol/front-run inventory into the 21 Sep open.
  • Buffer rules minimise churn at the 200/300 level; the All Ords (~500 names) has no protective buffer in practice — once below size/liquidity rank, out.
  • Implementation window: Thu 17 Sep close → Mon 21 Sep open (third-Friday convention); expect volume/pressure to build in the week before, same as 2022.

5. Sibling names

  • ZIP: NOT removed in Sept 2026 — no ZIP in any removal list; Feb-2026 reporting places it back inside ASX 200/All Ords financials space (~A$2.44, 4 Sep). The 2022 ZIP story is precedent only, not live flow.
  • TYR (Tyro): absent from all Sept-2026 lists (additions and removals) — no forced-flow driver at this rebalance. TYR weakness (if any) is sector/fundamental (SME headwinds, regulatory repricing; see correction below)
    • ⚠️ CORRECTION 8 Sep (superseded line): the surcharging drag is NOT Oct-2027. Verified: RBA surcharge ban on eftpos/Visa/Mastercard + interchange cap cuts (credit 0.80%→0.30%) land 1 Oct 2026; foreign-card cap + transparency rules 1 Apr 2027. Full treatment in 2026-09-08-tyr-regulatory-competitor-sector-health. Tape also moved: TYR A$0.74 at 8 Sep close, 52w low 0.665 (not A$0.88). If the dive treats EML/ZIP/TYR as one trade, the index-flow leg applies only to EML.

Implications for us (Eva trade desk)

  • The "collapse = forced flow" framing is directionally right but should be stated as mandate-flow + investability loss, not ETF redemptions — the ETF leg already cleared in 2022/23. Cleaner trade logic: the last institutional excuse to own EML (index eligibility) disappears 21 Sep; any re-rating now requires a bid (strategic buyer — recall Barrenjoey was engaged to sell all/part of the business) rather than passive relief.
  • Calendar: Fri 11 Sep after-close = index-shares proforma for capped/equal-weighted indices; Thu 17 Sep after close = implementation; Mon 21 Sep open = first ex-index session. Pre-21-Sep weakness is a known, largely telegraphed flow — front-runners are already positioned (they bought adds like ELS/SIQ/WBT and shorted deletes all month).
  • Morgan Stanley sized the whole Sept rebalance at ~A$2.5bn turnover (sharecafe) — EML's slice is small in dollars but enormous relative to its ~A$0.6M/day notional turnover.
  • Risk to the thesis: guidance-cut fundamentals (3 Sep: implementation delays, softer northern-hemisphere trading) are a genuinely independent leg — forced flow explains the shape of the sell-off, not the level floor.
