EVE — product research

Young, 2026-10-18: add EVE to the products research under Projects/vhost, with templates and features.

1. What EVE is

EVE (by Vercel) — an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents. Apache-2.0 licence. Free. Runs on Vercel, self-hosted, or any Node.js host.

EVE agents are persistent, stateful, and tool-using. They can read/write files, call APIs, manage memory, and run workflows with human-in-the-loop approval gates.

Licence: Apache-2.0 — clean, sellable, no competing-use restriction.

2. Templates (from eve.dev/templates)

2.1 Chat / web

TemplateIntegrationsWhat it gives us
Web Chat AgentWeb chat, SlackPersisted chat with per-user long-term memory, Better Auth, Drizzle, Neon, Upstash Redis
Full Stack Agent (Python)Web chat, Postgres, VercelNext.js web chat + Python FastAPI backend, agent manages shared task list
Voice AgentVoice, Web chatGPT-Live-1 handles listening/speaking; EVE agent runs tools, asks approvals, keeps durable state
TanStack Start ChatWeb chat, VercelPassword-protected chat with generative UI (search results, forms, data tables)

2.2 Collaboration / Slack

TemplateIntegrationsWhat it gives us
Slack AssistantSlackWebhook handling, Vercel Connect, starter agent, example tool
Company BrainSlack, dbt, MotherDuckAnswers business questions from documented dbt models
Data AnalystSlack, Postgres, VercelAnswers business questions from Postgres with charts and tables
Contentful AssistantSlack, ContentfulSearches, drafts, edits entries with approval before publishing
Team Knowledge AssistantSlack, VercelSearches files on Vercel Drive, saves notes/documents
Memory AgentSlack, VercelRemembers per-user preferences and channel conventions

2.3 Collaboration / GitHub

TemplateIntegrationsWhat it gives us
Software FactoryGitHub, LinearTakes tasks from GitHub/Linear, runs classifier/analyst/implementer/reviewer, delivers reviewed PR
GitHub Project MaintainerGitHub, Linear, ResendWeekly digest of open issues, acts on email replies, summarizes PRs, answers @mentions
Incident Investigation AssistantSlack, Datadog, GitHub, VercelInvestigates alerts with live evidence, read-only by default

2.4 Marketing

TemplateIntegrationsWhat it gives us
Marketing Team CoordinatorWeb chat, Slack, Notion, Resend, TypefullyLead routes work to specialists (positioning, content, social, SEO, email)
Social Media ManagerSlack, Typefully, NotionDrafts posts for X/LinkedIn/Threads/Bluesky/Mastodon, manages publishing queue

2.5 Specialised

TemplateIntegrationsWhat it gives us
iMessage Agent as a ServiceLinq, Stripe Link, VercelMulti-tenant iMessage agent with user accounts, scoped memory, encrypted vault, Stripe payments
Sanity Content AssistantSlack, Sanity, NotionQueries/edits Sanity content with GROQ, manages drafts/releases
Company Design AssistantSlackAnswers from a reviewed corpus of approved design guidance
Memory AgentSlack, VercelLong-term per-user memory

3. EVE features (what EVE gives us)

FeatureWhat it doesOur use
Persistent memoryPer-user, per-channel long-term memoryTenant-tuned receptionist that remembers customers
Tool useAgent calls APIs, reads/writes filesMedusa API calls, KB search, POS lookups
Workflow engineDurable workflows with human-in-the-loop gatesRefunds and bulk-pricing fire only after admin approval
Skills (load-on-demand)Skills load only when needed, not in every promptCatalogue context isolation — agent only loads relevant product info
ConnectionsCredential-carrying API connectors (zod schema, secrets from env)Medusa publishable/Admin keys
Multi-tenantPer-user scoped memory and identityOne EVE agent per tenant, isolated
Encrypted vaultEncrypted secret storage (iMessage template)Tenant API keys stored securely
Stripe integrationBilling via Stripe Link (iMessage template)Tenant billing

4. How EVE fits our stack

Per-tenant Docker compose (Tam's design):
  Medusa server + worker + Postgres + Redis + Next.js storefront
  + EVE agent (self-hosted, Apache-2.0)
    - instructions.md (tenant-tuned sales/support persona)
    - tools/ (Medusa Store API wrappers)
    - connections/medusa.ts (key config, secrets from env)
    - skills/ (refund/checkout playbooks, load-on-demand)
    - durable workflows with HIL gates (refunds, bulk-pricing)

EVE = the AI staff member. Not a chatbot bolted on — a persistent agent with memory, tools, and approval gates, embedded in the tenant's storefront.

5. EVE on our products

ProductEVE role
P1 Docs/KB siteEVE receptionist — answers customer questions from the KB
P2 Commerce storefrontEVE sales + support — product recommendations, order status, returns
P4 AI staffThe product itself — EVE is the deliverable
P7 Managed hostingEVE monitors the tenant's stack, alerts on issues

6. Licence summary

ComponentLicenceCost
EVE frameworkApache-2.0$0
EVE templatesMIT (most) / Apache-2.0$0
Vercel AI SDKMIT$0
Better AuthMIT$0
Drizzle ORMApache-2.0$0

EVE licence profile: clean. Apache-2.0 means we can repackage, rebrand, and sell the bundle with no competing-use restriction.

7. Known gaps

  • EVE is beta — API churn possible. Pin versions in the tenant template.
  • EVE self-hosted vs Vercel-hosted — we self-host on our prod node (per-tenant Docker). Vercel hosting would add cost and a vendor dependency.
  • No POS integration in EVE templates — EVE doesn't know about in-store sales. We build the POS→EVE bridge (order status, inventory lookup from POS).
  • EVE memory is per-user — for a receptionist, we need per-tenant shared memory (not per-user). That's a configuration choice, not a code change.

8. What we take from EVE's templates

TemplateWhat we takeWhere it goes
Web Chat AgentPersisted chat + per-user memory + Better AuthEVE reception on storefront
Company BrainAnswer from documented models (dbt)EVE reception from KB
Memory AgentPer-user preference memoryTenant-tuned receptionist
iMessage Agent as a ServiceMulti-tenant agent service + Stripe billing + encrypted vaultP7 managed hosting (future)
Software FactoryClassifier → analyst → implementer → reviewer pipelineInternal tooling (not a product)

We do NOT use: Slack templates (our customers don't use Slack), TanStack Start (we're on Nuxt/Next.js), Voice Agent (nice-to-have, not pilot).
